Objectiva

Case Study: J2ME

The Client

The Client has been the software innovator helping mobile carriers and mobile device manufacturers bringing dazzling-and profitable-new multimedia features and services to their end users. With more than 150 design wins and 100+ million Client-powered units deployed around the world, Client has the deepest, broadest and most respected multimedia software expertise in the industry.

The Challenge

Client needed to build a mobile Java team to enable delivery of innovative software applications across a spectrum of cell platforms. Client's existing development team had expertise in Symbian and Windows Mobile technologies, however they lacked critical J2ME skills. As J2ME was being adopted by a larger set of hand-sets, it became crucial to enable packet video technology on this platform. While the business need for J2ME was clear, the mobile software environment is extremely competitive, placing strain on margins, and emphasizing the need to deliver these services very cost-effectively. Client's roadmap included a significant scaling of the development team over time to support the expanding J2ME platform base-ultimately Client needed a development partner who could deliver.

The Solution

To ensure successful communication with key Client personnel (in their time zone), as well as to manage the off shore team Objectiva placed the lead architect at Objectiva's headquarters in Carlsbad, California. The J2ME team ramp-up proceeded slowly, as Client continued to win J2ME based contracts. Over the past year, the team has reached fifteen sustained J2ME resources. The team was established with a long-term staffing stability in mind, to ensure the team could acquire and maintain the necessary business knowledge critical to success in Client's environment.

Objectiva delivered two important projects within the first six months of the engagement. These projects were complex, requiring communication with server components developed and maintained in European time zones, and delivered to Client's client under very aggressive schedules.

Objectiva's team has enabled Client's research department to more effectively demonstrate technologies earlier in the lifecycle, boosting sales efforts of these new technologies and reducing the time from conception to market.
